Well, let me tell ya somethin’ ’bout them brick sizes. Folks always askin’, “How big’s a brick, anyhow?” Like it’s some big secret. It ain’t, I tell ya, it ain’t!
Them old-timey bricks, the ones they used way back when, they weren’t all the same, you know. Kinda like folks, all shapes and sizes. But mostly, they was ’bout this big… Now, lemme see if I can ‘member right… Some say they was close to 9 inches long, maybe a bit more, and maybe 4 inches wide, and ’bout 2 or 3 inches thick. That’s what I recall seein’ when the old houses got torn down, those bricks were sturdy, I tell ya.
Then things got all fancy-pants. They started makin’ ’em all the same, these so-called “standard” bricks. In some places, they made ’em a little longer, about 7 and 5/8 inches long I heard, with a height of about 2 and 1/4 inches, and a depth of about 3 and 5/8 inches. Now them’s some funny numbers ain’t they? Who measures in 5/8th of an inch anyways? Why can’t they just round them up, aye?
And then, wouldn’t ya know it, some other places, they make ’em different again. I heard tell of bricks that’s 8 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 2 inches thick. Makes ya head spin, all this different sizes.
- Some bricks is skinny, like them thin bricks they use for decoration. Not real bricks, if you ask me. Just for show.
- Some is big and fat, like them king-size bricks. Good for makin’ walls go up fast, I reckon. But heavy, oh so heavy! My poor back would never handle them.
- And then there’s all them other sizes in between, like them Norman bricks and Roman bricks. Sounds fancy, but they’re just bricks, when it comes down to it.
Now, why all these different sizes, you ask? Well, I ain’t no engineer, but I reckon it’s got somethin’ to do with what you’re buildin’ and where you’re buildin’ it. And maybe, just maybe, it’s got somethin’ to do with them fancy folks in charge makin’ things complicated for us simple folk. Seems to me, back in the days the bricks were simple, homes were better, just my thinking tho.
They even got different ways of measurin’ the things. Some folks talk in inches, some in them… “milli-somethings.” Can’t keep up with it all, I tell ya. Just give me a good ol’ brick, and I’ll know what to do with it, no matter how big or small it is.
And another thing, I heard tell they used to tax them bricks, way back when. Can you believe it? Taxin’ bricks! So, folks started makin’ bigger bricks so they wouldn’t need as many. Clever ain’t they? Seems those tax folks are always after our hard earned money, taxes on everything, back then and even now! Just ain’t right I tell ya, just ain’t right.
But no matter the size, a brick’s a brick, right? You use ’em to build houses, and walls, and all sorts of things. Strong and sturdy, they are. Been around forever, and they’ll be around long after I’m gone, I reckon. Just like them old houses built with them old-timey bricks. They last, they do. Not like these newfangled things they build nowadays.
So next time you see a brick, don’t just walk on by. Think about all them different sizes, and all them different ways they’re used. And think about all them folks who worked hard to make them, and all them folks who worked hard to build with ’em. It’s more than just a brick, I tell ya. It’s a piece of history, it is.
And don’t forget, the size matters, but it ain’t the only thing that matters. It’s how you use them bricks that counts. A good builder can make a strong house outta any size brick, that’s what I always say. Just like my old pappy used to say, a good worker can make do with any tool, it ain’t about the tool, it’s about the worker! I miss my pappy, he was such a wise man.
Anyways, that’s all I got to say ’bout brick sizes. Hope it made some sense to ya. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go tend to my garden. Them tomatoes ain’t gonna water themselves, you know.
