The Simplest Way to Build a Fire Pit with Bricks This Weekend

Okay, so, I finally did it! I built a fire pit in my backyard. Yeah, you heard that right – a fire pit! It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be, but it definitely took some elbow grease. Let me tell you all about it.

First things first, I had to figure out where to put this thing. I mean, you can’t just plop a fire pit anywhere, right? I picked a spot that was far enough from the house and any trees, but still kind of central in the yard. Safety first, people!

Then came the fun part – picking out the materials. I went with regular old bricks, you know, the clay kind. I heard about some special fire bricks that are more durable, but I thought, “Nah, let’s keep it simple.” I needed a whole bunch of them, and some gravel too.

I started by digging a shallow hole in the shape of a circle. No high-tech equipment here just an old shovel did the trick. It was kind of a workout, actually, you know, I need to work out more.

Next up, I poured in a layer of gravel to make a base. I stomped it down with my feet. Once I was confident in that foundation, it was time to get going on the bricks. This part was like putting together a giant, round puzzle.

I laid the bricks down in a circle, making sure they were nice and snug against each other. I didn’t use any fancy mortar or cement stuff. I just stacked them up, alternating them to make a basic pattern. It was kind of a workout, actually. I used a level to make sure the first layer was, well, level. That’s super important, or else the whole thing will be wonky.

Building the Walls

After the first layer, I just kept stacking more bricks on top. I staggered the bricks, you know, like they do in walls, so it would be stronger. I checked the level every now and then to make sure everything was still straight.

  • Step one: Stack the bricks.
  • Step two: Check if they’re level.
  • Step three: Repeat.

It took a while, but slowly but surely, the fire pit started to take shape. I ended up with walls about four bricks high. It looked pretty good, if I do say so myself!

I did not use concrete to hold them together but you can do that if you want to.

And that’s it! That’s how I built my fire pit. It was a bit of work, but totally worth it. Now I’ve got a sweet spot to hang out with friends, roast some marshmallows, and enjoy those cool evenings. If I can do it, you can too!
