The best brick for pizza oven. Learn about the different types!

Alright, let’s talk about this little project of mine – building a pizza oven, and specifically, figuring out what kind of bricks to use. It was a bit of a head-scratcher, to be honest.

So, I started digging around, trying to figure out what my options were. I found out that there are mainly two types of bricks people use: clay bricks and concrete bricks. Seemed simple enough, right? But then I realized that not all bricks are created equal, especially when it comes to dealing with the kind of heat a pizza oven throws out.

I learned that for pizza ovens, you really want something called “fire bricks” or “clay bricks”. These guys are made to handle crazy high temperatures. Normal bricks just won’t cut it – they might crack or even explode when things get too hot. I definitely didn’t want that happening, so fire bricks it was.

  • Consider the type of oven
  • Think about budget
  • Choose between clay or fire bricks

The next thing was figuring out how many of these bricks I needed. I measured out the space for my oven floor and calculated that I’d need around 30 bricks. But here’s the kicker – I needed at least 20 of them to be smooth and solid, no holes or anything, to make a good, even cooking surface. That’s pretty important if you want a pizza that cooks evenly and doesn’t have hot spots or cold spots.

Why Fire Bricks Are a Must

From what I gathered, fire bricks are the way to go because they distribute heat evenly. You know how some ovens have those annoying hot spots where one part of your food gets burnt while the other is still raw? Yeah, fire bricks help prevent that. They’re also super durable, so they should last a long time, which is great because I don’t want to be doing this again anytime soon.

After I got all my bricks, I started laying them out, making sure the smooth ones were all lined up for the floor. It was a bit like putting together a big, heavy puzzle. But eventually, I got it all set up, and I have to say, it looked pretty good.

Now, I haven’t fired up the oven yet – that’s the next step. But I’m feeling pretty confident that these fire bricks are going to do the job just fine. I mean, they better, after all that work! I’m really looking forward to making my first pizza in there and seeing how it turns out. If all goes well, I’ll be enjoying some delicious, homemade pizza real soon. And that, my friends, is what it’s all about. And I know the convection oven is better than a conventional oven for cooking pizza. Because the fan can circulate the hot air.

Anyway, that’s my brick story for the pizza oven. Hope you found it at least a little bit interesting. Stay tuned for the pizza-making update! Oh, one more thing, metal is not a good idea since heat reacts to it, I guess I avoided it in my oven.
