Making a fire pit with bricks: A beginners guide for your backyard

Hey everyone, it’s your guy here, back with another DIY project. I’ve always wanted a fire pit in my backyard, you know, for those chilly nights or just to hang out with friends. So, I finally decided to take the plunge and build one myself using bricks. I documented the whole thing, and now I’m here to share my experience with you guys.

Finding the Right Spot

First things first, I had to pick a good spot. I wanted it somewhere spacious, away from the house and any trees or bushes. Safety first, right? After pacing around my backyard a couple of times, I settled on a nice, open area. It felt right, not too close to anything that could catch fire, and with enough room for chairs and people to move around.

Digging It Out

Once I had the spot, I grabbed my shovel and started digging. I made the hole about 1.5 feet deep and roughly 5 feet wide. It was a bit of a workout, I won’t lie. I dug and dug until I had a decent-sized hole. This was going to be the base of my fire pit. I made sure the bottom was pretty level, so the bricks would sit evenly.

Laying the Bricks

Next up, the bricks. I bought a bunch of regular bricks from the hardware store. Nothing fancy, just your standard red bricks. I started laying them around the edge of the hole, making a circle. It was like putting together a big, round puzzle. I placed each brick carefully, tapping them into place with a rubber mallet to make sure they were snug and secure. After the first layer, I added more layers on top, staggering the bricks like you see on a wall. This makes the structure stronger. I kept building up, layer by layer, until I had a pit that was about four layers high. I made sure to leave some small gaps between the bricks on the bottom layer for air to get in—gotta have that airflow for the fire, you know.

Adding the Finishing Touches

When the bricks were all in place, I took a step back to admire my work. It was really starting to look like a fire pit! To give it a finished look, I added some capstones on the top layer. They’re just flat, decorative bricks that make the top edge look neat and tidy. Plus, they give you a nice place to rest your drinks or marshmallows.

First Burn

Finally, the moment of truth—time to test it out. I gathered some firewood, stacked it up inside the pit, and lit it up. It felt amazing to see the flames dancing around in the pit I had built with my own hands. I sat there for hours, just enjoying the warmth and the crackling sounds.

So, that’s how I made a fire pit out of bricks. It wasn’t too hard, and it was definitely worth the effort. Now I’ve got a great spot to hang out and make memories. If you’re thinking about building one yourself, just go for it. Trust me, if I can do it, you can too!
