Log Burner Brick Fireplace vs. Traditional Fireplace: Which One Is Better for You

Okay, here’s my story about building a log burner brick fireplace.

So, I’ve always wanted a cozy fireplace in my living room. Nothing beats the feeling of a warm fire on a cold night, right? I did some digging around, saw some folks talking about gas log fires and how easy they are, but I was set on a real wood-burning one. I mean, the crackling sound, the smell… you just can’t get that with gas. And I had heard that “gas fireplaces burn a lot cleaner and safer than wood,” from some green energy guy, but hey, I love the classic feeling.

Log Burner Brick Fireplace vs. Traditional Fireplace: Which One Is Better for You

First things first, I had to figure out where to put this thing. I had a blank wall that was just screaming for a fireplace. Then came the fun part – design time! I sketched out a few ideas, nothing fancy, just a simple, traditional brick fireplace. I pictured a single-piece brick hearth with an attached brick chimney, you know, the kind you see in old movies. I heard some people say that “a traditional wood-burning fireplace requires a chimney and will feature brick.” It sounded tough, but worth it.

Next, I gathered all my materials. Bricks, mortar, the whole nine yards. Oh boy, moving those bricks was a workout! I lined up the first row, making sure everything was level. That was the foundation, and it had to be solid.

  • First, I laid out the base of the fireplace. This is where the firebox would sit.
  • Then, I started building up the walls of the firebox. This is where I really had to pay attention to the mortar. Too much, too little – it’s a delicate balance, for sure!
  • Once the firebox was done, I moved on to the hearth. This is the area in front of the fireplace. I wanted it to be wide enough so that no stray sparks could do any damage.

The chimney was the trickiest part. I had to make sure it was properly aligned and sealed. I worked slowly, brick by brick, until it was finally done. After that, I cleaned up my mess, and there it was – my very own log burner brick fireplace!

First Fire

I let everything dry for a few days, just to be safe. Then came the moment of truth – the first fire. I stacked some logs, lit a match, and watched as the flames danced to life. It was magical! The warmth, the glow, it was everything I had hoped for. It’s been a few months now, and I still love it. Every time I light a fire, I feel a sense of accomplishment. I built that! And, if I ever find a crack in one of the firebricks, I’ll know how to replace it because I built the whole thing.

Sure, it was a lot of work, but it was totally worth it. Now, I have a beautiful, functional fireplace that I know will last for years. “With the proper care, they can last for years before needing to be replaced,” that green energy guy said. Well, I’m ready to give it all the proper care. And I get to enjoy the cozy warmth of a real fire whenever I want. It’s a win-win!
