How to Use Bricks in a Wood Stove? Easy Tips for Beginners!

Okay, so, I wanted to share my little project from this past weekend – building a wood stove using bricks. Yeah, you heard that right, a wood stove made out of bricks. It all started ’cause I’ve been looking into ways to heat my workshop without blowing up my electricity bill. And I had a bunch of old bricks lying around, so I thought, why not?

First things first, I gathered all my materials. Bricks, obviously. I also grabbed some fire bricks for the inside, ’cause they can handle the heat better than regular ones. Gloves, safety glasses – gotta keep those eyeballs safe, right? I also made sure I had a good, solid base to build on. Safety is important.

Next, I started laying out the base. I figured out the size I wanted and laid down the first layer of regular bricks, making sure they were nice and level. This was the foundation, so I took my time to get it right. You know the saying, measure twice, cut once.

  • Placed the fire bricks inside.
  • Built the walls up, layer by layer.
  • Made a little door, used some metal scraps.

Building the Walls

Once the base was set, I started on the walls. This is where the fire bricks came in. I lined the inside with them, creating a firebox. These fire bricks are the real deal. I laid them carefully, making sure they were snug against each other. Then, I continued with the regular bricks on the outside. It was like a brick sandwich – regular bricks on the outside, fire bricks on the inside.

Creating the Door and Chimney

Now, a stove needs a door and a chimney. For the door, I used some scrap metal I had. I fashioned a simple door and attached it with hinges. It’s not pretty, but it works. For the chimney, I used more bricks to create a narrow passage for the smoke to escape. I had to make sure it was tall enough to create a good draft.

The First Burn

After all the bricks were laid and the mortar was dry, it was time for the moment of truth – the first burn. I was a little nervous, not gonna lie. I lit a small fire inside, and guess what? It worked! The bricks held up great, the firebox got hot, and the smoke went right up the chimney. Success!

This little brick stove is now my go-to heat source in the workshop. It’s efficient, it was cheap to make, and it’s kinda cool to say I built it myself. Plus, it’s a great way to use up old bricks. If you’re thinking about a similar project, just make sure you do your research, use the right materials, and be careful. Stay warm, folks!
