Alright, let’s talk about them traditional brick houses, you know, the kind my old man used to build. Not like these fancy new things they got nowadays.
Them old bricks, they weren’t all the same size, you see. Some long, some short, kinda like people, I guess. They called ’em traditional or somethin’. Don’t ask me why. These young folks with their fancy words, I tell ya. Anyways, these bricks, they was maybe this long
(holds up hand to estimate)
, or maybe that long. And wide, too, some fatter, some skinnier. Thick as your wrist, some of ’em.
Now, these brick houses, they was strong. Stood up to anything. Wind, rain, even that crazy storm back in ’72. My neighbor’s house, that flimsy wood thing, it blew right over. But our brick house, it stayed put. Solid as a rock, it was. That’s why they say “she’s a brick house,” you know, means a woman’s strong and, well, you know… built good. Like them old houses.
- They always had them fireplaces, kept you warm all winter.
- Most had two or three floors, plenty of room for the whole family. Kids running around, making a ruckus. Good times, those were.
- And the look, they had this look… Colonial, they called it. Fancy word for old-timey, I reckon. Kitchen and living room downstairs, bedrooms up. Made sense, it did.
Some folks, they like to cover up the bricks with that… render stuff, they call it. Smooth it all out, make it look fancy. But I always liked the look of the plain old brick. Honest, you know? What you see is what you get. Ain’t nothin’ hidden.
Now, they got all sorts of house designs these days. Minimalist, they call it. Looks like a box to me. Then there’s the trendsetters, always gotta have the newest thing. Me? I like the old ways. Give me a good old traditional brick house any day.
There was this fella, had a book, “The Brick Tradition” it was called. Showed all these fancy house plans. Colonial style, big and grand. But even them fancy plans, they still used brick. Cause brick, well, it lasts. It’s real.
Even if you’re building one of them new houses, you can still put in some little old-timey touches. Make it feel homey, you know? Not like those cold, metal things they build now. Give me brick, give me wood. Give me somethin’ that feels real.
So, yeah, that’s the deal with them traditional brick houses. Strong, sturdy, and real. They ain’t fancy, but they’ll keep you safe and warm. And that’s what matters, ain’t it? Family, warmth, and a roof over your head. That’s what a home is all about. And them old brick houses, well, they was built for that.
You know, my grandma used to say, a good house is like a good marriage. Gotta be built on a solid foundation. And them old brick houses, they had foundations like you wouldn’t believe. Deep and strong. Just like the love in a good family. That’s what it’s all about.
And them bricks, they come in all sorts of colors too. Red, brown, even some kinda yellowish ones. Each one a little different, just like the folks that built them houses. Hard-working folks, honest folks. They knew how to build somethin’ that would last. Something to be proud of.
So next time you see one of them old brick houses, don’t just drive by. Take a minute, look at it. Think about the folks that built it, the families that lived there. Think about the stories them walls could tell. Cause them old brick houses, they ain’t just buildings. They’re history. They’re memories. They’re home.
