Well, let me tell you, I’ve seen a thing or two in my days. And one thing I know is how to build a brick BBQ with a chimney. It ain’t rocket science, but you gotta do it right, or you’ll be sorry. This thing, this brick bbq, it will last you a lifetime if you do it right. That’s how to build a good one. If you are not sure, don’t build it! You need to know how to build a brick bbq with chimney.
First thing’s first, you gotta get your bricks. Now, any old brick will do for the outside, but for the inside, where the fire’s gonna be, you want them firebricks. Them firebricks, they can handle the heat. They’re tougher than regular bricks. They hold the heat better, too. You don’t want no regular bricks crumbling on you when you’re trying to cook up a nice piece of meat, do you? No, you don’t. So, get yourself some firebricks for the inside. You can find them at them fancy stores, or maybe even online. Just make sure they say “firebrick” on ’em. VITCAS fire clay bricks is good. I used it before.
Now, how many bricks you need? Well, that depends on how big you want your BBQ. If you got one of them grills that’s about 700mm by 400mm, you’ll probably need around 100, maybe 120 bricks. That’s if you’re making it about 10 rows high. That’s a good size, I reckon. Not too big, not too small. If you want to build brick bbq with chimney, you need to know how big your grill is.
Next, you gotta figure out where you’re gonna put this thing. You don’t want it too close to the house, now. Fire hazard, you know. And you don’t want it too far away, neither. Gotta carry all them hot dogs and hamburgers out there, right? So, find a good spot. Level ground is best. You don’t want your BBQ leaning like a drunken sailor. I have built four brick barbecues, they are so good! I like to cook on them.
Once you got your spot, you gotta lay down a foundation. Just a simple concrete slab will do. You can mix it yourself or buy them bags of pre-mixed concrete. Just follow the directions on the bag. Make sure it’s level, though. Use one of them leveler things. You want your BBQ to be nice and straight.
After that concrete’s all dry and hard, you can start laying your bricks. Put down a layer of mortar, that’s the stuff that holds the bricks together, and then put your first row of bricks on top. Make sure they’re nice and straight. Use that leveler thing again. How to build a brick bbq with chimney? Just like that!
- First row of bricks.
- Then more mortar.
- Then more bricks.
Keep going like that, row after row. Make sure you stagger the bricks, like when you’re building a wall. You don’t want all the seams to line up. That makes it weak. And leave a space for your grill to sit in. And if you want to build a big firepit, do it! This is fun! This time I want a big firepit with a smoker.
Now for the chimney. That’s just a smaller version of the BBQ, really. Just a little box on top to let the smoke out. You build it the same way, with bricks and mortar. Make sure it’s lined up with the opening in the BBQ, though. You want that smoke to go up and out, not back into your face.
Keep building that chimney up, row after row. Make it as tall as you want, but not too tall. You don’t want it toppling over in the wind. A few feet above the BBQ should be good. I think chimney is important for a brick BBQ.
And there you have it. Your very own brick BBQ with a chimney. It ain’t hard, but it takes some time and effort. But it’s worth it. Nothing tastes better than food cooked on a BBQ you built yourself. I built four of them! And every time when I cook on them I will think: Oh, I know how to build brick bbq with chimney! You can build it yourself if you want. It is easy.
This brick bbq with chimney will stand there forever. You can use it next year, and the year after next year, and more! Remember to use firebricks. They are good. You need about 100 bricks if your grill is 700mm x 400mm. You can make your brick bbq with chimney bigger or smaller. It’s up to you. This is how to build brick bbq with chimney. Now you know it.
