Dark Bricks: What Are They and How to Use Them?

Okay, so, I was messing around with some bricks the other day, trying to see if I could change their color. You know, just a little weekend project. I had a bunch of those regular red bricks lying around from an old project. And I got to thinking, “What if I could make these things darker, like, almost black?”

I did some digging online, and it turns out, bricks change color over time because of, like, the weather and stuff. It’s called oxidation, I guess? It made me think maybe I could speed up that process somehow. So, I started by just cleaning the bricks. I mean, they were pretty dirty, so I grabbed a brush and some soapy water and scrubbed them down.

Dark Bricks: What Are They and How to Use Them?
  • First, I soaked them in water for a bit to loosen up the dirt.
  • Then, I scrubbed each one individually. It was kind of a pain, but I wanted to make sure they were really clean.
  • After that, I rinsed them off with a hose and let them dry in the sun.

Once they were dry, I tried a few different things. I remembered reading something about using heat, so I thought, “Why not?” I built a small fire pit in my backyard – nothing fancy, just some stones arranged in a circle. I carefully placed the bricks around the fire, making sure they weren’t too close to the flames. I didn’t want to, like, explode them or anything.

I kept the fire going for a few hours, turning the bricks every now and then so they would heat evenly. They started to change color, getting a bit darker, but not as dark as I wanted. I was getting there, but it was slow going.

Then I thought about trying some kind of sealant or stain. I went to the hardware store and wandered around the paint aisle for a while. I found a few products that claimed to darken brick, so I grabbed a couple of cans to try. They are really work, but need to be careful when apply them. If apply too thick, it will be a really bad looking.

Back home, I tested the sealants on a few of the bricks. I carefully applied the stuff with a brush, following the instructions on the can. Some of them worked better than others, but I finally found one that gave me the look I was going for. It was like a deep, dark brown, almost black. Success!

It took some time and a lot of elbow grease, but I finally managed to darken those bricks. They look pretty cool now, kind of like they’ve been around for ages. I’m thinking of using them to build a little pathway in my garden. It’s amazing what you can do with a little bit of effort and some know-how.

I’ll probably experiment some more in the future, see if I can get different shades. But yeah, that was my little brick adventure. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I enjoyed it.

Key takeaway

Don’t be afraid to try things out and see what happens. You might surprise yourself with what you can achieve!
