Every couple of rows, I threw in some rebar and hydraulic cement for reinforcement. I figured it was better to be safe than sorry, especially since I wanted this thing to last.

Next, I focused on the chimney. This part was a bit tricky, but I just kept stacking bricks, slowly tapering them inward to create that classic chimney shape. I have to admit, I felt pretty proud of myself watching it take form. I made sure to leave an opening at the bottom for the smoke to escape, and another one at the top, naturally.

Once the main structure was done, I lined the inside of the fire pit area with those firebricks. I learned that they’re better at handling high heat and they hold onto it really well. This part took some patience, but it was worth it in the end.

With the hard part over, I took a step back to admire my handiwork. It wasn’t perfect, but it was mine, and I was pretty darn happy with how it turned out. I let the whole thing cure for a few days, just to make sure everything was solid and set.

A Real Smoker
