Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about them bricks. You see, there ain’t just one size, no sir. It’s like tryin’ to find two peas in a pod that’s exactly the same, good luck with that! Back in the old days, they made bricks all sorts of ways, whatever they felt like, I guess. Then the government, them smarty pants, they started taxin’ bricks. Can you believe that? Taxin’ bricks! So, the fellas makin’ the bricks, they got smart too. They started makin’ bigger bricks, see? That way, they didn’t have to pay as much tax, ’cause they didn’t need as many bricks to build a wall.
Now, you got all kinds of bricks. Some folks call ’em common bricks, some call ’em facin’ bricks, and some even call ’em engineerin’ bricks. Sounds fancy, don’t it? But it’s just bricks, plain and simple. Then you got them special bricks, like concrete blocks, fire bricks for keepin’ things warm, and air bricks for lettin’ the air in. Makes sense, I reckon.
Different sizes, you say? Oh, honey, there’s a whole mess of ’em. You got your handmade ones, big as your hand, they call ’em “oversize” somethin’ or other. Takes less of them to cover a wall, that’s for sure. Then you got your regular bricks, the ones most folks use. They’re about this long, I’d say, holdin’ my hand out like this. In them fancy numbers, they call it somethin’ like seven and five-eighths inches long, or somethin’ like that. Confusin’, if you ask me.
- You got your Modular bricks, whatever that means.
- Then there’s them Norman bricks, sound like a fella’s name, don’t it?
- And Roman bricks, maybe them Romans used ’em, who knows?
- And king-size, well, them’s big, like a king, I guess.
- And thin bricks too, for when you don’t need a thick one.
See, there ain’t just one way to measure ’em neither. They talk about the length, the height, the depth… all them words just to say how big a brick is. It’s a wonder folks can keep it all straight. But I guess if you’re buildin’ somethin’, you gotta know what you’re doin’. You can’t just go grabbin’ any old brick, no sir. You gotta get the right size for the job, or your wall’s gonna look mighty funny. And nobody wants a funny lookin’ wall, that’s for sure.
They got these guides, you know, to help you pick the right brick. They got pictures and numbers and all sorts of stuff. Me, I just point and say, “I want that one,” but I guess some folks need all that fancy talk. Anyways, the main thing is, you got lots of choices when it comes to bricks. Big ones, small ones, fat ones, skinny ones… it’s like a whole brick buffet out there. So, next time you see a brick wall, just remember, there’s more to them bricks than meets the eye. They ain’t all the same, not by a long shot.
And that’s about all I know about them brick sizes. It ain’t rocket science, but it’s somethin’ to think about, I reckon. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. All this talk about bricks has made me hungry.
