What is a Brickwork BBQ? Everything You Need to Know

Okay, here is my sharing about how I built a brickwork BBQ from start to finish:

So, I’ve always wanted a nice BBQ grill in my backyard, you know, the kind that looks like it’s been there forever and just adds that special touch to the whole outdoor vibe. I’ve been using those regular, run-of-the-mill grills, but they’re just not the same. I figured, why not build one myself? It seemed like a fun project, and I was pretty sure it wouldn’t be that hard.

What is a Brickwork BBQ? Everything You Need to Know

First things first, I went online and started looking for some ideas. I needed to figure out how big I wanted it, what kind of bricks to use, and all that jazz. I didn’t want anything too fancy, just a simple, sturdy grill that could handle a good amount of food. After a few days of going through many photos and how-to articles, I felt like I had a pretty good idea of what I was going to do.

Next up, I headed to the local hardware store to get all the stuff I needed. I’m talking about bricks, mortar, some metal grates for the actual grilling part, and a few other bits and bobs. Honestly, carrying all those bricks was a workout in itself! I got everything loaded up in my car and went back home, ready to get my hands dirty.

The first day was all about preparing the area where the BBQ would go. I marked out the spot, made sure it was level, and started laying down the first layer of bricks. I have to say, mixing the mortar and getting it to the right consistency was a bit trickier than I thought. But after a few tries, I got the hang of it. I spent the rest of the day carefully laying bricks, making sure everything was nice and even. By the time the sun started to set, I had the base and a few layers of the walls done.

    Day 2

  • Started early, feeling pretty good about what I’d accomplished the day before.
  • Continued building up the walls, brick by brick.
  • It was slow going, but seeing it take shape was super satisfying.
  • I made sure to leave space for the metal grates and a little area underneath for the charcoal.

Once the walls were high enough, I placed the metal grates in their spots. They fit perfectly! I then added a few more layers of bricks around the top to finish it off. I stood back and looked at my work—it looked like a real BBQ grill! I couldn’t wait to fire it up and cook some food.

I let the mortar dry for a couple of days, just to be on the safe side. Then, the moment of truth arrived. I loaded up the grill with charcoal, lit it up, and waited for it to get nice and hot. I threw some burgers and hot dogs on the grates, and they cooked up perfectly. It was such a great feeling to eat food cooked on a grill that I built with my own two hands.

Building a brickwork BBQ was a real adventure, and I’m so glad I did it. It’s not just a grill, it’s like a piece of the backyard now, something that’s going to be there for years to come. If you’ve been thinking about doing something similar, I’d say go for it. It’s a lot of work, but it’s totally worth it in the end.
