Building a Fire Pit with Bricks: Tips for Beginners!

So I wanted to build a fire pit in my backyard. Nothing fancy, just a simple spot where we can roast marshmallows and chill on cool evenings. I did some quick research and figured bricks would be the way to go. They’re cheap, sturdy, and they look pretty decent.

First thing I did was to hit up the local hardware store. I grabbed 96 Belgian wedge wall bricks. I wasn’t sure if these bricks were safe for a fire pit, so I asked the manufacturer and they said they are safe. Then, I picked up some construction adhesive too, since I read online that it helps keep the bricks together.

Once I got home, I started laying out the bricks in a circle where I wanted the fire pit. It took a bit of adjusting to get it just right, making sure the joints were tight and everything lined up. Then, I took a spade and marked the outline of the pit by digging around the circle.

Next up was digging a trench. I made it about 12 inches deep and as wide as one brick, following the outline I marked earlier. This was to give the fire pit a solid foundation.

After that, I started assembling the fire pit. I laid the first layer of bricks in the trench, forming a perfect circle. Once I was happy with it, I took off the second row, applied a good amount of construction adhesive to the first layer, and then put the second row back on. I repeated this for the next layers, making sure to press each brick firmly to ensure a good bond.

Building it up was pretty straightforward. I just kept adding layers, using the adhesive between each one, until the fire pit was about the height I wanted. I also threw in a little bench on the side for seating, built the same way with bricks and adhesive.

All in all, it was a fun little project. It’s not perfect, but it does the job. Now we have a nice spot to hang out, enjoy the fire, and make some s’mores. Plus, I got to get my hands dirty, which is always a bonus. I hope you guys like it!
