Well, let me tell ya, I seen a lot of things in my time, but them brick barbeques is somethin’ else. You know, them things you build outta bricks to cook your food on outside? My neighbor, he got one, and Lord, he’s always out there cookin’ up a storm. Smells so good, makes my mouth water somethin’ fierce.
So, I got to thinkin’, maybe I need one of them brick barbeques myself. I ain’t gettin’ any younger, but I still like a good piece of meat cooked over a fire. And it ain’t just meat, no sir. You can cook all sorts of things on them things. My neighbor, he told me he even cooked a pizza on his! Can you imagine that?
Now, I ain’t no builder, never was. But I seen how they put them things together. Looks like you just gotta stack them bricks up, one on top of the other. And you gotta use that, uh, what’s it called… that grey, wet, sticky stuff… cement! Yeah, that’s it, cement. Gotta put that between the bricks to hold ’em together. Else, they’ll just fall right over, and then where’d you be?
And you gotta make a place for the fire, down low. That’s where you put the wood or them charcoal briquettes. And then up above, you need a grate, you know, one of them metal things with the bars, to put your food on. Gotta have that so the food don’t fall right into the fire. Simple enough, right?
Now, some folks, they get all fancy with their brick barbeques. They build ’em real big, with all sorts of extra stuff. I seen one once, it had a place to put your plates and your tools, all built right in. And another one, it had a little roof over it, like a tiny little house. Keeps the rain off, I reckon. Me, I just want somethin’ simple. Just a place to cook my food outside, enjoy the fresh air.
- First, you need bricks. Lots of bricks.
- Then you need that cement stuff.
- Gotta have a place for the fire.
- And a grate for the food.
- And a strong back to do all the lifting!
My neighbor, he said it took him a couple of days to build his. Said he had to let the cement dry real good before he could use it. Can’t rush these things, I guess. Gotta do it right, or it won’t last. And if you are going to build a brick barbeque, you want it to last, right?
I reckon the hardest part is gettin’ all them bricks. They’re heavy, you know. And you need a whole lot of ’em. Maybe I can get my grandson to help me. He’s a strong boy, always willin’ to lend a hand. He can carry the bricks, and I can tell him where to put ’em. Teamwork, that’s what it’s all about.
And then, once it’s built, oh boy, the cookouts we’ll have! I can see it now. The whole family gathered ’round, the smell of cookin’ meat in the air, the kids runnin’ around playin’. It’ll be just like the old days. I like to make a brick BBQ, and I will make it.
I looked around, seems like you can get them grates and stuff at them stores, you know, the ones that sell everything for your house. They ain’t too expensive, neither. Maybe forty, fifty bucks. The bricks, though, that’s where it gets ya. But I figure, it’s an investment. A good brick barbeque, it’ll last you for years. And think of all the money you’ll save not eatin’ out! That’s how I look at it, anyway.
Now, I ain’t sayin’ it’s gonna be easy. Nothin’ worth havin’ comes easy, that’s what my mama used to say. But I reckon I can do it. Just gotta take it one step at a time. One brick at a time. And before you know it, I’ll be cookin’ up a storm on my very own brick barbeque. Just you wait and see.

I’m gettin’ excited just thinkin’ about it. A brand new brick barbeque, right here in my own backyard. It’s gonna be somethin’ special, I can feel it. And when it’s done, I’m gonna invite the whole family over for a big cookout. We’ll have us a real good time. Just like the good old days. Yep, a brick barbeque, that’s what I need. And by golly, I’m gonna get one.
