Brickwork Basics: Understanding the Standard Size of a Brick

Alright, let’s talk about them bricks, you know, the things they use to build houses and stuff. Folks always asking, “What size is a regular brick?” Well, it ain’t as simple as you think. There’s all sorts of bricks out there, big ones, small ones, skinny ones… it’s a whole mess of ’em!

Now, I heard tell some folks call ’em “standard bricks.” Standard, my foot! Seems like nothin’s standard these days. But from what I gather, a lot of these so-called standard bricks are about this big… Imagine holdin’ it in your hand, it’s about… hmm… maybe a little less than 8 inches wide, that’s like… from here to here on your hand (demonstrates with hand). And about 3 and a half inches high, you know, not too tall. And about the same deepness as the high, like a little box kinda. They say that’s about 190mm wide, 90mm high, and 90mm deep in them fancy measurements. But who uses that stuff anyway?

But then you got them other bricks, the long ones. They call ‘em “modular” bricks sometimes, sounds all highfalutin, don’t it? These fellas are longer, like, maybe two of the regular ones put together end-to-end. I heard someone say they’re about 222mm long, and still about 106mm wide. That’s like… a good bit longer than the regular ones, you see? Makes sense, I guess, for building bigger walls and such.

  • Regular Bricks: About 8 inches wide, 3.5 inches high, and 3.5 inches deep. (Or 190mm x 90mm x 90mm if you wanna be fancy)
  • Long Bricks (Modular Bricks): About 222mm long and 106mm wide. Longer than the regular ones.

Now, where do they get these bricks from? Well, they dig up this mud stuff, they call it clay. Sticky stuff, it is. Then they take that clay and they cook it, yeah, they cook it real good in a big ol’ oven, a kiln they call it. That makes the clay hard and strong, like a rock. Then you got yourself a brick! Takes a lot of work, I tell ya, more than just diggin’ a hole and callin’ it a day.

And what do they use these bricks for? Well, just about everything! Houses, walls, fireplaces… I even seen folks makin’ walkways and patios out of ‘em. They’re tough and they last a long time, that’s for sure. You want a good strong house, you gotta use bricks, that’s what I always say. Wood rots, you know, but them bricks, they stay put.

And there ain’t just one type of brick, no sir. I heard tell of skinny bricks, thin like pancakes, and big ol’ bricks they call Titan bricks, strong enough to hold up a mountain, or so they say. It all depends on what you’re buildin’, I reckon. You wouldn’t use them little skinny bricks for a big ol’ wall, now would ya? And you wouldn’t use them giant Titan bricks for a little flower bed. You gotta use your common sense.

So, next time someone asks you about brick sizes, you tell ‘em what I told ya. There’s regular ones, long ones, and a whole bunch of others in between. And they’re all made from clay that’s been cooked up real good. It ain’t rocket science, it’s just bricks. But they’re important, those bricks. They keep us warm and dry, and they hold up our houses. So, be thankful for them bricks, I say.

And don’t get too caught up in them fancy numbers and measurements. Just remember, most bricks are about the size of your hand, give or take. And some are longer. That’s all you really need to know. Common sense, that’s what it is. Just good ol’ common sense.
