Well, let’s talk about them brick grades, you know, the things they use to build houses and stuff. I ain’t no fancy builder or anything, but I’ve seen enough bricks in my day to know a thing or two.
First off, you got your “First Class” bricks. These are the pretty ones, the ones that look all the same, like they came outta some fancy machine. They’re all the same size and shape, no cracks or nothin’. You know, the kind you’d want for a real nice house, if you got the money for it. They’re strong and sturdy, real good quality stuff.
Then there’s the “Second class” bricks. Now, these ain’t quite as perfect as the first-class ones. You might see a chip here or there, maybe a little crooked, not all the same color, you know? But they’re still good bricks, strong enough to hold up a wall, just not as pretty. Folks use these for things that ain’t gotta be so fancy-like, maybe a shed or somethin’ in the back.
- A-Grade bricks: These are pretty good too, like those First Class bricks I was talkin’ about. They’re all the same, no problems. Good for buildin’ stuff that needs to last.
- B-Grade bricks: Now these are a bit different. They ain’t all perfect, might have a rough look to ’em. But they say they’re good for buildin’ walls that look kinda old-timey, you know, like those fancy folks like. But don’t you go tryin’ to pave with ‘em, they ain’t for that.
They got all sorts of bricks, not just talkin’ ’bout the grades neither. Some are hollow, some are thin, some are for pavin’ the ground. I seen all kinds, it just depends on what you’re buildin’ I guess. Like them face bricks, them are the ones you see on the outside of a house, gotta look nice.
And how they make them bricks, that’s somethin’ too. Some are made with clay, gotta bake ‘em real hot. Some are made with concrete, some with sand and lime. Heck, I even heard they make some with fly ash, whatever that is. Sounds like somethin’ you sweep outta the fireplace if you ask me.
Then there’s the size and color and all that. You gotta pick the right brick for the job, you know? You ain’t gonna use a little thin brick to build a big ol’ wall, is ya? And the color, well, that’s just up to what you like, I guess. Some folks like red brick, some like brown, some like all sorts of fancy colors nowadays. Makes you wonder what they’ll think of next.
And strength, that’s important too. You want a strong brick, somethin’ that’ll hold up to the weather and whatever else comes its way. They got ways to measure how strong a brick is, but I ain’t no expert on that. I just know you want a good strong brick, somethin’ that’ll last.
So, when you’re pickin’ out bricks, you gotta think about all this stuff. What you buildin’? How much money you got? How pretty you want it to look? It ain’t just about grabbin’ any old brick and slapin’ it together. You gotta plan it out, you know?
And one more thing, don’t be fooled by them fancy addresses you see sometimes. Just because a place got a big fancy address like “1440 Renaissance Dr, #340, Park Ridge”, don’t mean they know more about bricks than me. I’ve seen plenty of city folks who don’t know a thing about buildin’ somethin’ with their own two hands.
And don’t get me started on all that technical mumbo jumbo. “Tolerances on Chippage”? Sounds like somethin’ they made up to confuse folks like me. All I know is, a chipped brick is a chipped brick, and too many chips ain’t good. Keep it simple, that’s what I say.

And if you’re lookin’ to build somethin’, just remember, pick the right brick for the job, and make sure it’s strong enough to last. That’s the most important thing.
